My 1983 VW Golf MK1 GT

My pet project has been 4 years in the building process and has finally reached the stage where I can safely say,"the GT will be up and running very soon." Many of the delays caused were purely changing components and items which I did not like.”

My build started out with a fully prepped '83 body, sandblasted, coated and painted in original white. All components are brand new VW original parts and no "pirate" spares were considered.
Work on the chassis included beefed front lower controls, towers supported and braced (have to for the power I am planning). New control arms and poly bushes, new rear axle, new fuel tank and to boot the standard GT anti sway bars front and rear. Coil-over’s all round with 320mm vented disks and Wilwood calipers up front and rear converted to VR6. Front running solid castor / camber plates machined out of EN 30 to allow up to -4 degrees of seting. Brake fluid lines are all nickel copper entering the calipers via Kinetic hoses. Top and lower (front) and rear tower brace courtesy of Tony at Zabka Motorsport will also assist in firmness. I have decided to fit a full roll cage which will be manufactured out of 307 stainless steel tubing.
The basis of my power plant is a 16V ABF block. Bottom end sports a TDI crank, 95.5mm stroke (bought new and boxed by Gary Law) and 2L flywheel, turning Scat Rods topped with Ross 82.5mm pistons. Motor balanced by Fulrace Engineering, that is entire bottom end. Clutch is a Center force Dual Friction. A complete ARP stud and bolt kit takes care of holding everything in place from mains, big ends, oil tray, cylinder head, flywheel, water pump, oil pump, pressure plate with an EIP crank brace in place covered by a aluminum oil tray. On the top side the head has been lovingly treated by Nico at NJ Powersport to a flow only. Cams have been replaced with CSD Stage 3 Turbo cams with Titanium lifters and Supertech Inconel valves.
Inlet manifold is an ABF stock item with a VR6 throttle body. (MRP manifold sourced will be used for a shootout), Fuel rail from EIP and a set of Bosch 750cc injectors. Fuel supplied by 2 x Walbro high pressure pumps and pressure is controlled with a Turbosmart FPR. High pressure hoses from Good Year takes care of delivering fuel. I have also opted to have the rocker cover and inlet manifold sorted by Sartor Bros. “Powerkote” coating.
Exhaust manifold from TS Motorsport supports the Turbonetics TO4E Stg. 3 turbo with a .63 exhaust housing. Waste gate of choice is an Evolution. Exhaust is a 63mm custom polished stainless system with a Megan silencer fitted by Exhaust Tech in Meyerton.
Air is pumped via polished aluminum pipes and intercooler (Mark at MRP Motorsport) to the intake. A Turbonetics "Godzilla" dump valve is fitted of the cooler. A custom aluminum radiator (MRP) fitted with an OZ fan cools the other liquid. Oil cooler by APR. All silicone hoses by Samco with Turbosmart Boost clamps, fuel hose clamps and water hose were sourced from Bridegestone. Boost is controlled with a Turbosmart duel stage regulator.

Custom engine mounts (Thanks Stephen) keeps the 16V in place all connected to a 5 speed cable shift box with Quaife LSD build by Nico at NJ Powersport who also modified the steering column to house the hydraulics from Tilton. Custom side shafts and a set of Peloquin CV's will make sure the power gets transferred. Rims are a set of 17" Racing Hart lightweight rims fitted with Yokohama Advan Sports tyres.

Wiring (Dicktator) routed by "Sparky" all covered with VW specification finishing tape. (no splits or cuts anywhere on the harness) Velociti harness (new) was fitted and battery placed in the spare wheel well in a stainless battery case, rubber lined on the inside. Engine management by Dicktator. Spark is provided by MSD.

Gasket sets for ABF supplied by Eurosport in England. (Good guys)

All nuts & bolts (except engine internals) on the car has been changed to stainless steel button and socket cap screws sourced from Wurth. This means behind door panels and everywhere it could be changed.

There are many other mods, just to many to mention. After weeks of decision making I opted for a Velociti dash (old school type did not fit my requirements) and fitted it to a set of mountings sourced from a rear ended Velociti from my mate Mr Mod at Mr Mod Engineering.
Additional Rev Counter, oil pressure, oil temp, water temp and boost gauges, sourced from VDO will be mounted in custom VDO gauge pods. I am still trying to figure the mounting area.
Algadine Panelbeaters (Thanks Basie) took care of fitting new a lower cradle without disturbing anything. Interior, Roof, panels and Q panels were done by Piet "Matte". Carpet.....still looking for a suitable product.
Entire interior is sound proofed.

Steering wheel is a Quick Release Momo Gotham (Thanks Ouboet) and a set of Cobra Monaco seats fitted on my own design 6 way adjustable aircraft quality billet aluminum. Harness's are also Sabelt, 3 point Clubman's.
Budget to date.....well from day one to date I have spent R380 000-00 (rounded to nearest hundred) and I can with honesty say ...."money well spent"

VW Instrument Panels - a bodger's guide

Back in the late 1970s, Volkswagen was an early pioneer in the use of electronics in vehicle instrumentation.  The systems used were fairly primitive - just a handful of transistors and a few diodes - but meant that instrument wiring could be greatly simplified, with additional functions…

CALCULATING PORT LENGTH

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 19:39 1 Comment

Port Length

The port length required to tune a volume of air to a specific frequency can be calculated by using the following equation:

   Lv = (23562.5*Dv^2*Np/(Fb^2*Vb))-(k*Dv)

where,

    Dv = port diameter (cm)

    Fb = tuning frequency (Hz)

    Vb = net volume (litres)

    Lv = length of each port (cm)

    Np = number of ports

     k = end…

POWER RESPONSE - PORTED ENCLOSURE

Posted on October 31, 2011 at 19:37 0 Comments

To calculate the power response of a ported enclosure system, you will need to know the following: Vas = equivalent compliance of driver (litres)

Qes = electrical Q of driver at resonance

Fs = resonance frequency of driver (Hz)

PEmax = maximum input power for driver

Fb = resonance frequency of the system

F3 = frequency at which response is down by -3dB

Dia = effective driver diameter driver (cm)

Xmax = peak linear displacement…
